Independent living for older people
We're really proud of our housing for older people, and have made sure all homes are modern, bright and welcoming. We’ve recently refurbished our schemes to make sure you can stay living there for as long as you wish.
If you’re 55 or over, take a look at our different housing options below:
If you’re 60 or over, you'll live in your own home and we’ll support you to help you live independently, for as long as possible. If you need us to, we can make regular visits and calls to make sure you’re ok, and we’ll help you with letters and to deal with other organisations and agencies.
You’ll usually live in a group of flats and many have a communal laundry, guest room and lounge. There’s a member of staff who works full time or part time (depending on how many homes they look after), and each flat has an alarm system you can use to call for help if you need it, which we hope gives you peace of mind, 365 days a year.
The level of support you’ll receive is flexible and we’ll review it each year to make sure you get what you need.
We have sheltered housing in Knowle and Kingsdown in Bristol, St James Court in Taunton, Combe Down in Bath, and Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset.
Similar to sheltered housing, with the added reassurance of staff being on site 24 hours a day, and an option to have a midday cooked meal. We’ll help you to manage on your own, for as long as possible, even when you have higher levels of care and support needs.
You may find, as many people do, that this level of housing can delay, or even avoid, a move to a residential home.
If you apply to move into one of our independent living with care schemes, your local authority social care team will assess your need for care at the time you apply. The amount you pay depends on your financial circumstances and the level of your care needs.
We have schemes that offer independent living with care in Filton in Bristol and Combe Down in Bath.
If you’re 55 or over, you’ll live in a bungalow or flat, in a range of locations across Somerset, North Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset. Most of the bungalows are for those of you who are 60 or over, if you’re giving up larger homes in London.
If you’d like more information, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help, or get in touch with your local Council’s Housing Team.

The media project at our Bristol Foyer produced a short film which shows the impact of our £10 million, four year long improvement programme targeted at our sheltered and extra care housing and its impact on our residents. Filming took place at Knightstone Place in Worle and Knightstone House in Kingsdown, Bristol. Click here to watch the video!
