71 new affordable homes to be provided in Knowle West, Bristol

28 October 2014

We joined Bristol City Council and Kier Living on Friday 24 October to mark the laying of the first ground floor slab of one of 71 new affordable homes being built on Torpoint Road in Knowle.

The site for the homes was previously made up of disused allotment land and blocks of three storey flats, some of which were suffering from subsidence. The area needed regeneration and to provide more family homes.

Caroline Hughes, our Regional Development Manager, said “These new homes will revive the area and contribute to the overall regeneration of Knowle West. This is an area of Bristol much in need of new affordable housing.

We’ve worked closely with local residents and established community groups, as well as the Council and Kier Living, to make sure we could provide these homes for the benefit of the community and the city of Bristol.”

Richard Austin, Bristol Area Manager for Kier, said “This is the first Kier Living project in Bristol, and the first with Knightstone. As such we’re all hoping that it’s a great success.

The development will have a contemporary design and includes the provision of four passive houses (Passivhaus) which result in very low-energy use homes. We’ll also be working on the improvement of a large area of public open space to provide new and improved pathways, lighting and play areas.”

Cllr Mark Bradshaw, Assistant Mayor for Place at Bristol City Council, said “We have a housing shortage in this city, with 14,000 people on our waiting list. We need a mix of affordable homes, for rent and to buy, to meet this demand.

These 71 homes are for people to live and for a community to exist, and that I very much welcome on behalf of the city of Bristol. I think this is going to be a marvellous scheme and I want to do more of this kind in the future.”

18 of the new homes will be completed by March 2015, with the remainder completing in phases up until September 2015. The new development will provide a mix of rented accommodation and homes for sale through shared ownership.
