We've completed our £10 million improvement programme for our older people’s homes

16 May 2014

We've completed an extensive £10 million, four year long improvement programme, to make significant improvements to our sheltered and extra care housing.

The programme included the refurbishment of 11 schemes in Bath, Bristol and Weston-super-Mare, with many communal areas and individuals’ kitchens and bathrooms being replaced or renewed.

We've also installed automatic front door entry systems at schemes to help residents with mobility problems access their homes more easily. The programme was specifically tailored to meet the needs of the residents in the different schemes, with a focus on providing better lighting, level access showers, more accessible garden areas and new facilities like buggy stores.

Darrell Jackson, Strategic Business Manager for Older People at Knightstone, said ‘We listened to our residents so we knew what we needed to do to meet their needs and expectations. We’ve modernised and refreshed their homes, to provide a more homely environment with a friendly atmosphere.

It’s important that our residents have homes and facilities that help them to maintain their independence for as long as possible, and continue to enjoy life.’

One resident said, ‘We were consulted on what we wanted, and we got what we wanted. I think throughout there are some very modern things, not just modern but thoughtful.’

Another resident said, ‘You couldn’t ask for anything else, and I’m very happy here I must say.’

Our media project, which is based at the Bristol Foyer, has produced a short film capturing the difference that the improvement programme has made to residents’ lives. You can watch it and find out more here: www.knightstone.co.uk/independent-living

We've also held a series of well attended opening events throughout the course of the four year programme, which have celebrated residents’ new homes.
