Anti social behaviour

We all want to live in our homes and neighbourhoods happy and hassle free. We know that this doesn’t always happen and sometimes people don’t get on, or suffer because of how other people behave. It’s really not nice if this happens to you and we take all cases of anti social behaviour seriously.

What is anti social behaviour?

It’s when someone acts in a way to cause alarm, harassment or distress to someone who isn’t part of their family or home. To be classed as anti social, the behaviour must happen more than once, carry on over time and be something that could be stopped.

It’s important to understand that we all have different lifestyle choices, and we sometimes need to accept some behaviour, even though we don’t like it.

Anti social behaviour includes:

  • Hate related incidents like racist, homophobic and other discriminatory acts
  • Taking, dealing or buying illegal drugs
  • Verbal abuse
  • Harassment
  • Intimidation
  • Violence or threats of violence
  • Loud noise
  • Criminal damage
  • Graffiti.

What can you do?

Talk to the person as they may not know they’re upsetting you. You may be able to sort out personal disagreements and everyday problems just by talking about it. When you do talk to the person about it, remember to:

  • Be calm and friendly and show you're happy to hear their point of view
  • Listen to what your they have to say
  • Try not to interrupt when they're talking
  • Stay in control and don't shout
  • Don't be abusive or aggressive
  • Politely walk away if you feel the person is becoming unreasonable.

What will we do?

We’ll:

  • Listen to you and find out more about the problem
  • Be clear about what we can and can’t do
  • Agree an action plan with you to let you know what we'll do and what you'll do
  • Take action using informal methods through to tenancy enforcement and other court action, depending on the problem
  • Keep you informed of our progress and action taken
  • Bring in the expertise of other agencies if needed, for example the local council, the Police, or other local community and support groups

  • Recommend you take independent advice if needed
  • Deal with urgent repairs and remove offensive graffiti within 24 hours
  • Offer support to everyone involved so we can find a resolution.
