Going local: community in Knowle West come together to teach each other new skills

13 April 2015

40 residents of the Inns Court community in Knowle West, Bristol attended our ‘build and make’ event at the local community centre on Friday 10 April.

The event offered local people the chance to try out a range of activities run by local individuals and groups. The event was organized by us and the Inns Court Community Centre.

South Bristol-based charity Re:Work ran the last of three carpentry workshops on the day, to transform old play equipment in the community centre’s garden into planters.

Young people from the community then decorated the planters with stencils and paints, with help from a local artist, Lizi Hoar.

Jane Edmonds, our Assistant Director, said “Building strong and stable communities is a key priority for us. As well as transforming old into new, this event has also brought a whole community together in sharing and learning skills from one another.

We’re especially grateful to our maintenance contractors, NKS Contracts Ltd, who came to help the community in dismantling the old play equipment, ahead of the carpentry workshops.”

Lee Pinker, Director of NKS Contracts Ltd said, “We were very happy to be involved in this. The Knowle West district is not far from our office, in fact a number of our staff live in the area. Therefore, it was particularly satisfying for us to be able to contribute to, what is essentially, our community. We hope the young people involved took something positive from the experience.”

Also on during the day:

  • Cookery sessions with Steen the Chef from Bristol
  • Willow weaving, run by Sarah Jayne Edwards, a local sculptor and designer
  • Spoon whittling with James Newman, who also runs a men’s group and a bread making group in Knowle.
