Community Empowerment news: Two communities come together to create a dragon!

28 July 2014

We’ve worked with two of our communities to design and position a dragon as part of Taunton Deane’s Dragon Trail.

Bristol had Gromits, Wells had swans, now we have the Mayor’s Deane Dragon Trail!

Among 30 decorated dragons dotted around Taunton Deane is Sparkle. Young people from Westford Grange, Wellington, chose the design as part of their ‘Dreamscheme’ activity and residents of Waterside House in Taunton decided its great, central location, outside the Brewhouse Theatre.

We’ve been running the Westford Grange Dreamscheme for two years, with the police and local residents. It’s a young people’s initiative. They decide what they’d like to do to benefit their community, learn new skills and earn points for the time they give. They redeem these points for trips and activities which they choose. Sparkle is the latest project – others include painting a play area, planting hanging baskets and helping run community events.

The young people chose Sparkle’s decoration from a selection of designs, after lots of discussion, and personalised the dragon by adding the name of both their community and Waterside House.

The trail runs across Taunton from July to September. Maps cost £1 from the Taunton Tourist Information Centre and the dragons will be auctioned in October. Money raised goes to the Somerset Community Foundation to support other community projects.

If you‘re in the area have a go at the trail and let us know if you’ve seen our dragon!
