Community Empowerment news: We're helping local communities of Hartcliffe and Withywood make the most of their outside space
We’re working with a number of partners in Bristol to help the local communities of Hartcliffe and Withywood make the most of their outside space.
Our homes in The Groves are adjacent to Pigeon House Park, which is a lovely green space stretching the length of Pigeon House stream from The Groves all along Hawkfield Road to Whitchurch Lane. Jacqui and Jan are local residents who are keen to set up a Friends of Pigeon House Park group and approached us to support a consultation event. They wanted help to engage the local community to find out how they could be involved in making this very local green space feel active, buzzing and used to its fullest potential.
The group of volunteers are enthusiastic, and keen to influence the Section 106 money which has been put towards the park, for the benefit of the residents who live around it, (including private homeowners, Bristol City Council residents and Knightstone residents). We work with all residents in this community and harness the energy there, regardless of who their landlord is.
Our Community Empowerment Officer, Sophie Burns, worked with a range of partners to deliver what was a brilliant consultation day for the community. Hartcliffe and Withywood Angling Club ran the BBQ, Teenage Parent project provided free facepainting, Hartcliffe and Withywood Community Partnership supported the day, Cashpoint and Avon Wildlife Trust had information stalls, Learning Partnership West delivered play activities for young people, and we operated a smoothie bike that was a huge hit with the kids. Phew!
The event was postponed from a rainy May day to a perfectly sunny June afternoon, which brought out dozens of residents and families. We were delighted by the turnout – including the early birds - with lots of children litter-picking the green before we put up the gazebos, even roping in a granddad to help! The group will now be looking for a landscape designer to start drafting ideas to make the space more user friendly.
