“Create Fest ’14” event at Yeovil Foyer celebrates young people’s creativity and talents

23 June 2014

Young residents at our Yeovil Foyer held a ‘Create Fest’ on Friday 13 June  - opening the doors of the Foyer to the public, to showcase the skills and talents of the young people and give visitors an insight into what it’s like to live in supported housing.

The event was organised, hosted and led by a group of young people who want to challenge and change the sometimes negative public perceptions held about homeless young people.

Visitors were invited to learn to do activities like knitting and sewing a fabric flower, to making a clay monster or a paper pot and planting a sunflower seed. Visitors could also have their face painted or their nails done, join in a drumming workshop, make a dragon sculpture from recycled metal or just enjoy some of the scrumptious cakes made by the young people.

Will Sloan, a resident of the Yeovil Foyer and member of the Create Fest organising committee, said: “The best thing about the event was the response from the general public. They said it was welcoming and warming.

Also, the fact they asked if we do this every year is a compliment for all the hard work and commitment everyone has put in. I feel proud and privileged to have been part of the team.”

Penny Schofield, Training and Development Manager at Knightstone, said ‘The young people we work with have a huge range of talents and have done a fantastic job organising this event themselves. It shows what can be achieved when people build on the positives – rather than focus on the negative.”

Yeovil Foyer is run and managed by us, as part of the Somerset-wide Pathways to Independence Service (P2i). The P2i service offers support for homeless and vulnerable young people aged between 16 and 24. The service offers family mediation, housing advice, emergency accommodation and supported housing.
